After salvaging old newspapers used as insulation in a friend's cottage, Suzanne Lisson compiled a list of 300 births, deaths, marriages, funerals, memoriams and obituaries. Ellen Purdy, above, was included in the obituaries. |
Mum never considered herself a pack rat. In her opinion she was simply saving things until they were needed. All glass jars were kept in the cellar for pickling and preserving time. Pieces of string were rolled up and put in a tin cannister. Brown paper bags were carefully folded for future use. Orange crates were stored away to be turned into a book case or bedside table at a later date.
When Suzanne Lisson salvaged some Telegraph Journal newspapers used for insulation in a friend's cottage, dated from November of 1927 to December of 1928 that were musty and mouse chewed, she recognized that some of the information should be saved as there was a need. She cut out and compiled a list of about three hundred Births, Deaths, Marriages, Funerals, Memoriams and Obituaries.
Some of the names discovered in the newspapers deaths were: BROMLEY, Eva wife of Albert E. of Montreal; COPELAND, Sarah widow of Charles, Saint John; GAULT, Eliza age 81, daughter of the late John and Catherine GAULT of Saint John; HABERFIELD, John, Lancaster (DVA); STACKHOUSE, Helen wife of Edwin C., Saint John.
Scroll down this page to find Suzanne's complete List at the end of the queries.
By the way, Suzanne has been doing genealogy in a serious manner for the past twenty five years. Some of her roots are royal in nature as she can trace her lineage to King Edward IV, William the Conquerer and Charlamagne. Born in New Zealand, her mother a Saint John native with Irish and Loyalist roots, she has done extensive research on New Brunswick families and willingly shares her information.
As Spring housecleaning time approaches, don't be too quick to discard old things as they could be a treasure to a genealogical researcher.
